All high‑speed machines, such as cars, motorcycles, e‑skateboards, and electric scooters, place heavy emphasis on handling‑related safety. The quality of handling directly determines riding comfort, safety, and overall riding enjoyment.
As someone who has skateboarded for 22 years and worked as a design engineer for e‑skateboards and electric scooters, I believe good scooter handling hinges on three key characteristics:
- Linear and smooth throttle response This is something I find most baffling about this industry. I have tested many scooters priced under $1200, and wow, their throttle behaviour is completely erratic. Often you press the thumb throttle partway and nothing happens; press it a little further and the scooter lurches forward violently. Acceleration is jerky and inconsistent. I keep wondering: I’m already spending $600‑1200 USD, why can’t manufacturers tune a properly linear throttle? That is what gives you true rider‑machine synergy, where the throttle follows your inputs precisely.
- Low centre‑of‑gravity chassis For most people commuting on paved city roads, there is no need to ride a scooter that feels like standing on stilts. Basic physics: the higher the centre of gravity, the less stable the vehicle is at high speeds. It’s like racing Usain Bolt in your wife’s high‑heeled shoes. I see many riders in forums crashing or sliding out during high‑speed cornering. In most cases this is not rider error — it comes from poorly designed, overly high decks that trigger high‑speed wobble and side‑slip falls.
- Tuned suspension Many brand owners never actually ride their own products and just copy existing designs. They assume softer suspension is always better. In reality suspension requires extensive fine‑tuning. Good suspension compresses and rebounds cleanly once when you hit a speed bump, without oscillating repeatedly to compromise safety, yet it also does not feel rock‑hard.
In my opinion, these three points define whether a $600+ scooter is pleasant to ride, safe at speed, and genuinely fun.
